For this you need a copy of the registration bulletin available from the College Board. Your school will have copies if you are in a school with a College Board code. International students can usually get copies by mail or from the local American Library or US information center. The easiest way to register is online at www.collegeboard.com. But remember you need an internationally valid credit card. Also do not miss the deadline for the test. Make a note now of the test date and relevant deadlines.

SAT Format

   Format of the SAT

The new version of the SAT test (introduced in March 2005) is three hours and forty-five minutes in length. Some require only SAT-I, which is a test of your verbal and math skills. Others, usually the higher-ranking colleges, require both SAT-I and SAT-II. SAT-II are subject tests; you usually take two or three of these: international students most frequently choose from Math (level I or II), Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Literature, and French. You should always check the requirements of the colleges to which you want to apply.

   Who administers the SAT?
The SAT is developed and administered by the US-based "College Entrance Examination Board". This implies that Collegeboard sets the questions, conducts the test, and sends each examinee the score report.

When do I take the SAT test?
Ideally you should take SAT-I towards the end of grade XI or the beginning of grade XII. You need to complete your testing before you send your applications. Again, check the college deadlines. Plan well ahead in case you need to repeat the tests. If you try to take the tests too soon - just after grade X - you normally do not do so well. SAT-I scores improve with increasing maturity!

What is a good SAT score?
A good score is any score that gets you into the college of your choice! A SAT score is not an absolute value. It is a scaled score to indicate your performance in comparison with that of the other 2 million students who take this test every year. Your scores can go up and down according to how you feel on the day of the test or how well you have prepared. That said, on a total score of 2400 (800 critical reading, 800 math, 800 writing) a score of 1650-1800 is adequate for many colleges. A score of 1800-2100 is good, and a score above 2100 should ensure that you have no problems for admission.

IELTS information

IELTS Registration

IELTS Scoring Pattern

IELTS Format

IELTS

IELTS Registration

   IELTS Registration

   Test Dates
For latest test dates, contact the nearest BRITISH COUNCIL office or visit www.ielts.org. The Listening, Reading and Writing Modules are conducted on the same day as the test date, but the Speaking Module is conducted on any date between the period starting from seven days before to seven days after the examination date for the other three modules. The acceptability of a score is totally at the discretion of the institute-applied or govt. body (immigration). However, as a general rule, scores below Band 5 are considered to be too low and above Band 6 are deemed to be adequate to good. Band 5 to 6 Band scores are borderline. An overall score of Band 6.5 is mostly accepted as a good score. The individual module's Band score is considered as per the requirement.

For example, an Engineering Institute will emphasise on a good Band Score (6.5 or above) in Listening Module, as the institute's mode of teaching is lecture-oriented, whereas if a person is seeking a job in public - relations, then more weightage is given for a good Band Score (6.5 or more) in the Speaking Module.

In the Listening module and the Reading module, each question carries one mark and there is no negative marking for incorrect answers. Then the overall score is converted into a Band score from 9 to 1. The other two modules (Writing and Speaking) are rated as per the effectiveness, language skills, communication ability, clarity, fluency and spontaneity of the candidate. The same in these two modules can be developed by referring to the assessments made in various books. The candidate must gauge and try to comply with the examiner's assessment method.

IELTS Format

   Format of the IELTS

   The IELTS has four parts:
1. Listening Section - This consists of 4 parts with approximately 40 questions. The test is designed to assess the candidate's ability to understand spoken and written English in academic and social contexts and also use the language to communicate in the spoken and written forms.

IELTS scores are accepted by educational institutes, professional bodies, government undertakings and for immigration processing in Australia, New Zealand, U.K., Canada and certain American universities (like Princeton and Duke), where the IELTS scores are accepted in lieu of TOEFL scores.

The IELTS test has two versions:
1. The Academic Module - This module is intended for candidates seeking entry to a university or institution of higher education offering degree and diploma courses (i.e. those seeking undergraduate or postgraduate courses).

   2. The General Training Module - This module is intended for students seeking entry to a secondary school or to vocational training courses. The demand for test seats remains very high even after almost a year after the introduction of the test, candidates have to wait for months since short-term test dates are fully booked. The four-hour test consists of four sections, each measuring mainly one of the basic language skills (although some tasks may require multiple skills) and focusing on language used in an academic, higher-education environment.

The TOEFL Internet-based test emphasizes integrated skills and measures all four language skills, including speaking. Questions are basically of the who said what type.
2. Structure (grammar) (15-20 minutes)
• Type of Questions: Identify the erroneous word(s) in the sentence. Fill in the blanks using the appropriate word.
3. Reading Comprehension and Vocabulary (70-90 minutes)
• Type of Question: Questions are posed about content, intent of the author, and ideas inferred from each of the 3-4 passages given.
4. Essay Writing (30 minutes)
• Type of Question: To write an essay on a given general topic, and take a position towards it.

The Listening and Structure sections are computer-adaptive, meaning that the difficulty level of each question depends on the correctness of previous responses.

Three sub scores are obtained, each of which is given on a 0-30 scale: Listening, Structure/Writing (combined), and Reading. These sub scores are averaged to obtain the final score, which is in a 0-300 scale. The Writing score is also reported separately, on a 0-6 scale.

   Paper-based Test (PBT)
In areas where the iBT and CBT are not available, a paper-based test (PBT) is given. The PBT tests essentially the same skills as the CBT, albeit with some differences, noticeably the number of questions (which is higher in the PBT) and the score scales. The final PBT score ranges between 310 and 677, and is based on three sub scores: Listening (31-68), Structure (31-68) and Reading (31-67). Unlike the CBT, the score of the Writing section (referred to as the Test of Written English, TWE) is not part of the final score; instead, it is reported separately on a scale from 0 to 6.

TOEFL Test

   TOEFL Test

The letters TOEFL stand for 'Test Of English AS Foreign Language'. More than 2400 education institutes in the United States and Canada require TOEFL scores from each applicant. The test is also used by institutions in other countries where English is the language of Instruction. The TOEFL tests the ability to understand North American English. A TOEFL score is valid for 2 years, and then is deleted from the official database. The TOEFL is administered worldwide by Educational Testing Service (ETS). The test was first administered in 1964 and has since been taken by nearly 20 million students. In addition, many government, licensing, and certification agencies and exchange and scholarship programs use TOEFL scores to evaluate the English proficiency of people for whom English is not their native language.

Who Should Take the TOEFL Test?
Nonnative English speakers at the 11th-grade level or above should take the TOEFL test to provide evidence of their English proficiency before beginning academic work. The total score is reported on a scale from 200 to 800. The Verbal and Quantitative Scores are reported on a scale of 0 to 60. For the Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA) score, the scale is from 0 to 6. Note that your AWA performance is not reflected in your total GMAT score (on 800). You get to know your total, verbal, and quantitative score immediately after taking the test. Official GMAT score reports, which include the AWA scores, are mailed approximately two weeks after you take the test and take another ten days or so to reach your address.

In addition to these scores, the score report also contains percents (%) below. These "% below" indicate the percentage of examinees who scored below you based on the scores of the entire GMAT testing population for the most recent three-year period. These percentages are important in considering how an applicant for admission to a particular management school compares with everyone in the specified period, with all other applicants to the same school, and with students already enrolled at the school.

   Reporting the Scores
There is a provision of reporting your GMAT test scores to a maximum of five universities of your choice, the cost of which is built into the GMAT test fee you pay. But the catch is : you have to select these five universities/business-schools which will receive copies of your score report before you begin to take the test. This implies that even before taking the GMAT, you need to do some homework on which universities you’re finally going to apply, based on the score that you expect to attain.

For reporting to each additional university, the charge is US $28, payable by an international credit card or a dollar denominated draft. The analytical writing section requires you to write - or rather type - two short essays in 30 minutes each. The first is the Analysis of an Issue, in which you need to analyze the issue presented and explain your views on it. The second essay is Analysis of an Argument, in which a given argument has to be
critically analyzed and evaluated.

   Quantitative Section
Following an optional ten-minute break, you begin the Quantitative Section of the GMAT exam. This section contains 37 multiple-choice questions of two question types— Problem Solving (PS) and Data Sufficiency (DS). The two kinds do not have a definite break-up, usually there are around 20 PS and 17 DS questions. The section tests you on a level of Maths that is comparable to the level of Class 10 exams, with questions on Number Systems, Percentages, Fractions & Decimals, Algebra (including Quadratic Equations), Geometry (including Basic Coordinate Geometry), Ratio & Proportion, Area & Volume of 2-D and 3-D figures, and Probability. This list is not exhaustive; questions from beyond these topics may also be asked.

While the Problem Solving questions require you to solve a mathematical problem directly and choose the right answer, the Data Sufficiency is of a trickier variety. Each problem comprises a question followed by two statements, which may or may not lead to the answer to the given question. This is what you need to ascertain - whether the given statements can be used to answer the question or not, and if so, whether the statements can be used independently or in conjunction. Each of the five answer options present the five possibilities that arise in this case, and you have to apply the basic principles of mathematics with a strong dose of logic to get these right.

   Verbal Section
After a second optional ten-minute break, you begin the Verbal Section of the GMAT exam. This section contains 41 multiple choice questions of three question types—Reading Comprehension, Critical Reasoning, and Sentence Correction. You are allowed a maximum of 75 minutes to complete the entire section. The three types are intermingled, with no fixed number for each type. The break-up of questions among SC, CR, and RC could be 14-14-13 GMAT test is a required part of the admissions process for most MBA programs in the U.S., Canada and the rest of the world. GMAT is a multiple choice test that is administered in English. Until June 1997 GMAT was a standardized multiple choice test - meaning that all test takers were given the same questions. GMAT is now a Computer Adaptive Test where test takers will not receive the same questions. The multiple choice format has been retained.

What is a Computer-Adaptive GMAT Test?
In a computer-adaptive test, the computer screen displays one question at a time, which is chosen from a very large pool of questions categorized by content and difficulty. The first question is always of a medium difficulty, and each subsequent question is determined by your responses to all the previous questions. In other words, the CAT adjusts itself to your ability level - you’ll get few questions that are either too easy or too difficult for you.

Each question in the GMAT CAT has five answer options, and you are required to select one of these five as the correct answer by clicking on it. A subsequent question is displayed on the screen only after you have answered the previous question, so you cannot skip a question. You cannot also go back to a previously answered question to change your answer. Thus, if you guess a correct answer or answer a question incorrectly by mistake, your answers to subsequent questions will lead you back to questions that are at the appropriate level of difficulty for you.

   Who administers the GMAT?
The GMAT test is developed and administered by the US-based Pearson VUE under the direction of the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC), a non-profit organization of graduate business schools worldwide. This implies that Pearson VUE conducts the test, and sends each examinee the score report. For the conduct of the test, Pearson VUE has appointed testing centers in various countries.

   When is the GMAT held?
All-round-the-year. Unlike other exams, you can choose your own date and time for taking the GMAT! The test is administered five-days-a-week (Monday through Friday), twice-a-day. September to December is the high season for GMAT, so in case you intend to take the test during this period, you need to register very early (say 90 days in advance) to get a date of your choice. Otherwise, registering at least 15 days in advance is mandatory. The GMAT test lasts roughly 4 hours, and most centers offer two slots : 9 A.M. and 2 P.M.

GRE information

GRE Registration

Scoring Pattern

Eligibility and Fees

Format of the GRE

GRE Test

GRE Registration

GRE Registration

The General Test is offered as a computer-based test in the U.S., Canada, and many other countries. The total score is reported out of 1600 and the sectional scores are out of 800. These "% below" indicate the percentage of examinees who scored below you based on the scores of the entire GRE testing population for the most recent three-year period. The first is the Analysis of an Issue task, in which you need to analyze the issue presented and explain your views on it. For the Issue task, you will be able to choose 1 of 2 essay topics selected by the computer from the pool of topics. You will get 45 minutes to write or type this essay.

The second essay is Analysis of an Argument, in which a given argument has to be critically analyzed and evaluated. The Argument task does not offer a choice of topics; the computer will present you with a single topic selected from the topic pool. You will get 30 minutes to write or type this essay.

For both the essays, the emphasis is on the "Analytical" part, and not on the "Writing" part. This implies that a concise essay with well-reasoned points written in simple English will be looked upon more favorably than an essay which falls short on the analytical aspects even though it is high on writing skills.

   Quantitative Section
Following an optional ten-minute break, you begin the Quantitative Section of the GRE. This section tests you on a level of Maths that is comparable to Class 10 mathematics, with questions on Number Systems, Percentages, Fractions & Decimals, Algebra (including Quadratic Equations), Geometry (including Basic Coordinate Geometry), Ratio & Proportion, Area & Volume of 2-D and 3-D figures, and Probability. This list is not exhaustive; questions from beyond these topics may also be asked. The section has 28 questions to be completed in 45 minutes.

   Verbal Section
After a second optional ten-minute break, you begin the Verbal Section of the GRE exam. The verbal section in GRE Test requires a good vocabulary level, the basic skills of correct English coupled with reasoning and analysis. The 30 questions, to be attempted in 30 minutes, consist of four types : Antonyms, Analogies, Sentence Completion, and Reading Comprehension. The four types are intermingled, with no fixed number for each type.

      GRE Exam Format and Length
   GRE Test

The letters GRE stand for 'Graduate Record Examination'. The GRE is a Standardized test that measures verbal, mathematical and analytical skills. It is intended to help the graduate schools (of all fields other than business) assess the potential of applicants for advanced study . Nearly 2300 universities in the US require GRE scores from each applicant. The GRE tests the fundamental skills - Reasoning and Comprehension included - and does not require any subject-specific theoretical study. (This is true only for the General GRE Test, and not the GRE Subject, which is required by certain universities. In this section, we mean the General GRE Test whenever we refer to the GRE Test). GRE is a Computer Adaptive Test where test takers will not receive the same questions.

What is a Computer-Adaptive GRE Test?
In a computer-adaptive test, the computer screen displays one question at a time, which is chosen from a very large pool of questions categorized by content and difficulty. The first question is always of a medium difficulty, and each subsequent question is determined by your responses to all the previous questions. In other words, the CAT adjusts itself to your ability level - you’ll get few questions that are either too easy or too difficult for you.

Each question in the GRE CAT has five answer options, and you are required to select one of these five as the correct answer by clicking on it.

   Who administers the GRE?
The GRE Test is developed and administered by the US-based "Educational Testing Service" (ETS) under the direction of the Graduate Record Examination Board , a non-profit organization of graduate business schools worldwide. This implies that ETS sets the questions, conducts the test, and sends each examinee the score report. For the conduct of the test, ETS has appointed Testing Agencies in various countries, which act as franchisee for ETS. In India, this agency is the "Sylvan Testing Services Pvt Ltd" which administers the test at 9 centers in the country: Ahmedabad, Allahabad, Bangalore, Calcutta, Chennai, Hyderabad, Mumbai, New Delhi, and Trivandrum.

   When is the GRE held?
All-round-the-year. You can choose your own date and time for taking the GRE Test. The test is administered in the above cities five-days-a-week (Monday through Friday), twice-a-day. September to December is the high season for GRE Test, so in case you intend to take the test during this period, you need to register very early (say 90 days in advance) to get a date of your choice. Otherwise, registering at least 15 days in advance is mandatory. The test lasts roughly three-and-a-half hours, and most centers offer two slots : 9
